The Interreg IIIA plan :France/Walloon area/Flanders
The INTERREG III A France-Walloon area- Flanders plan is a community initiative with funding from the European Regional Development Fund and from the many regions that it covers : (www.interreg-fwf.org).

This initiative is an essential element in the creation of and support for cross-border activities between France and Belgium, contributing as it does to the co-financing of concrete cross-border activities on the Franco-Belgian border.

Based on three sub-plans : tripartite, Franco-Walloon and Franco-Flemish, the activities fall into a number of different areas, such as economic development, tourism, cultural development, training, technological innovation, environmental issues, rural development, daily life, health, etc.

Measure 2.2 of the INTERREG III A France-Walloon area-Flanders plan concerns the development of tourist and cultural potential in the cross-border territories. It encompasses four types of action :

developing the tourism structure by improving its quality and creating networks, supporting the private sector, making the most of the historical heritage, creating tourist routes that cover the whole area ;
promoting tourism by creating new markets, networking, advertising and marketing, technical management, exchanging expertise and organising shared or complementary tourist events ;
improving accommodation in and access to tourist areas, by setting up quality charters, networking, developing communications, particularly developing a co-ordinated system of sign posting for routes, increasing the professionalism of the tourist sector.
developing the cultural potential of the cross-border area by sharing expertise, encouraging the general public to visit the other areas, allowing free movement of artists and works, creating common cultural products…
The creation of this website is part of a plan entitled creation of a cross-border network of walking/riding paths, co-financed by the FEDER, under the auspices of the tripartite sub-plan of the INTERREG III A France-Walloon area-Flanders plan. The project is based on a partnership between the IDETA development initiative, the Nord department council, Toerisme Oost-Vlaanderen, the Leiedal development initiative, the AWZ – Flemish Region, the Aisne CDT, the Walloon Ministry of works and transport, the Botte du Hainaut tourism centre and Thiérache Développement.

In this case, the www.randonner.fr website is part of an information technology and communications development being carried out by the Aisne CDT, the Nord department council and the Tournaisis region.

The Nord department
The region. The Nord department is divided into five very different areas, with a wealth of tourist attractions. Whether you go to Flanders & the Côte d’Opale, Heart of Flanders, the Lille metropolitan area, the Hainaut or the Avesnois, you are sure to enjoy :
-
the warm welcome and hospitality of the 2.5 million inhabitants, their enduring traditions and innate sense of fun : Flemish inns, carnivals, giants, the Lille braderie (street market)...
-
the unusual flavour of their local specialities : pot’je vleesch, Maroilles cheese, Flemish gin, bêtises de Cambrai sweets, beer, smoked fish…
-
their cultural and architectural heritage, with 117 museums (26 of them listed), 8 fortified towns, typical Flemish town squares, etc.
-
the lovely, varied landscapes, perfect for a range of outdoor activities : 50 km of shoreline, 2 national parks, 1,300 km of paths/tracks for walking, mountain biking & horse riding, fine sandy beaches just made for sand yachting and kite flying.
Our partner. The cross-border activities of the Nord department council are supported by the Nord Comité Départemental du Tourisme (Tourist board) whose main function is to promote tourism in the department and surrounding areas.
The Nord CDT is also involved in new initiatives to help the local people develop and diversify their land : transforming a disused mine into a mining museum with former miners as tour guides, turning an old slag heap into an artificial ski run, creating a museum in the old public baths at Roubaix, using a disused factory building in Roubaix to house old shops and old shop signs and taking part in the Lille European capital of culture event of 2004.

The Hainaut and the Tournaisis

The region. The Tournaisis, part of the Hainaut province, is a land of legends, traditions and history, bordering France and the eastern edge of Flanders. Its many-hued hills and wooded plains extend from Lille to Brussels. It is the green lung of the area, a place of traditional hospitality.

The Tournaisis is not a well known region but has much to offer in terms of culture, leisure activities and the natural environment...

Cultural attractions include some superb architecture, such as the magnificent Hôpital Notre-Dame à la Rose in Lessines, stately châteaux with romantic gardens and parkland and a range of museums – open air, in old factories or imposing mansions, with unaccompanied tours, commentary on headphones or as part of a special show.

Leisure time activities include outdoor activities at the Parc Paradisio, walking/riding in the countryside, relaxing at leisure centres, having fun at local fairs and festivals, savouring fine cooking in the best restaurants or admiring the skill of local producers and craftsmen.

The natural environment is as colourful and varied as you could wish, changing constantly with the seasons and the different regions …
