In
the
North
of
the
department
is
the
green
and
leafy
Thiérache.
It
is
a
region
of
rolling,
hedge
trimmed
meadows,
full
of
horses
and
cows,
home
of
Maroilles,
an
orange
rinded
cheese
with
a
strong,
yet
subtle
flavour.
The
Thiérache
is
also
a
land
of
fortified
churches :
there
are
over
60
of
them,
built
of
brick
with
slate
roofs
in
the
16th
century
by
the
local
people
as
a
place
of
refuge
during
the
war
between
the
French
and
the
Spanish.
The
‘Axe
Vert’
is
an
old
railway
track,
30
kilometres
long,
running
between
Guise
with
its
famous
Familistère
and
Hirson
and
the
Benedictine
Abbey
of
Saint-Michel,
founded
in
945.
It
is
ideal
for
walkers,
cyclists,
horse
and
pony
riders. |

Treasures
and
wonders
of
the
Aisne:
|
 |
| The
Abbey
of
Saint-Michel |
Absorb
the
peace
and
spirituality
of
this
thousand
year
old
site,
one
of
the
few
Benedictine
abbeys
in
the
North
of
France.
Admire
the
pure
lines
of
its
splendid
monastic
architecture,
remarkably
well
preserved,
the
organ
built
by
Jean
Boizard
in
1714
and
the
cloister
murals
depicting
the
life
of
Saint
Benedict. |

| The
stronghold
of
the
Dukes
of
Guise |
For
a
thousand
years
this
massive
keep
has
towered
over
the
valley
of
the
Oise.
A
fortified
castle
was
added
at
the
time
of
the
powerful
Dukes
of
Guise.
Under
the
remains
of
the
upper
buildings
you
can
venture
through
a
veritable
labyrinth
of
vaulted
rooms,
including
a
special
hall
reserved
for
lepers,
and
some
secret
underground
passages
that
have
been
beautifully
restored.

| The
Godin
“Familistère
Godin” |
Guise
was
the
place
where,
in
the
19th
century,
a
wealthy
and
forward-looking
industrialist
founded
the
incredible
“Workers’
Paradise”
or
“People’s
Palace”
that
is
the
“Godin
Familistère”.
Relive
this
moment
in
history
and
admire
the
unchanged
urban
complex
that
he
built,
with
its
extraordinarily
comfortable
accommodation
for
the
time,
its
gardens,
little
theatre,
etc. |
